Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), The Art of Human Excellence
In the early 1970s, Richard Bandler, a psychology student, and John Grinder, a linguistics professor, began NLP studies at the University of Santa Cruz – California. The first work they did was to model famous therapists of the time, and seek to identify what internal and external patterns they used that made their work so effective. These therapists were Milton Erickson, a hypnologist physician, Virginia Satir, who worked with family therapy, and Fritz Perls, who developed gestalt therapy.
Bandler and Grinder began to model these therapists, both in body language (non-verbal) and spoken language (verbal), to develop techniques that they could replicate in order to improve the results in their own sessions. Other students and researchers were involved in this modelling work, extending it to different contexts, such as business and creativity. The research was focused on successful people, with the goal of identifying the patterns that led them to achieve such excellent results.
The researchers observed external patterns, such as specific behaviours and language, that successful individuals used when performing their activities with excellence. They were also able to identify that these patterns directly influenced the results. In addition, the research group noted that there were internal patterns, such as beliefs and presuppositions, which were also powerful resources for achieving success.
This discovery showed that behind our behaviours there is an internal structure of thoughts and emotions that directly impact our actions and, consequently, the results we achieve in our lives.
Why use NLP
Behind every action there is a reason or a motive to act. If we seek to generate a change in a person’s behaviour or performance, we must first understand the reason why a person is acting in the way he or she acts. That person’s model of the world is what NLP calls mental models.
According to Peter Senge, mental models are “deeply rooted assumptions, generalizations, illustrations, images or stories which influence our way of understanding and acting in the world.” In other words, the mental models of each individual defines how they perceive what is going on around them, how they will feel about it, how they think and, ultimately, how they will act.
The problem with mental models is that most are unconscious, which means that we do not necessarily know that we have a certain mental model. This often causes us to act in a certain manner without understanding exactly why we have the behaviour. NLP allows us to understand why we make the unconscious decisions we do.

NLP allows us to better understand our brain’s inner functioning by identifying our mental models so that we can question them, reflect on them and decide whether we need to reframe them.
This concept brings the word potential to NLP’s name, because it suggests that through our life stories, experiences and values, we have become programmed to have certain beliefs and mental models which directly impact our behaviour. Likewise, it suggests that we can use NLP techniques and tools to repotential or reprogram our internal structure and focus on the results we really want to achieve.
We all have different life histories, interests, values, beliefs and motivations which result in each of us having different perceptions of the world. This causes us to see situations in a variety of different ways, and to react in a particular way, which can directly influence interpersonal relationships.
The external reality of an event is the same for everyone. We receive the information through our sensory channels (NEURO) that go through filters (PROGRAMMING) and form an internal representation for each person. This internal representation generates a state in each person, which leads to different emotions that end up interfering in the physiology, behaviour and actions of that person, both verbally and non-verbally (LINGUISTICS).
The key is linked to the filters which were used to generate the internal representation, as they are unique for each person. When processing information, it is common for a person to omit some parts, quickly generalize the information, or to even to distort it, based on their values, beliefs and life history. When looking at a person’s reaction or behaviour to a particular situation, it is important to know that each of us has a different world map. To assist them in their development, we must first understand the map they use.
The internal and external patterns that researchers have identified in people who achieve the results they want in their lives have been transformed into the models, tools, and techniques that are taught in NLP Courses.
How NLP works
In order for us to achieve better results, it is fundamental to know more about our own functioning, and this way we can increase our possibilities and choices and alter our attitudes and behaviours to lead us to the life we want to live.
The conceptual definition of NLP is: the study of the structure of the subjective experience of the human being. NLP can also be defined as a methodology that focuses on achieving excellence by helping a person achieve the results they want in their life and creating models from successful attitudes.
NLP goes beyond just the techniques. It is a methodology that can be used daily, in practical ways in our daily context. It is strongly connected with the results we obtain in both our professional and personal lives.
By teaching NLP, we can teach people to manage their thoughts and emotions, allowing them to self-lead and to lead their relationships with others, hence, improving performance and results.
NLP works on building solutions to achieve goals, positive outcomes and improve human relationships.
In addition, NLP constantly provokes reflections about our desired identities as leaders, professionals and in each of the roles we have with our family and in our personal environments. NLP offers tools to achieve the results we seek in all areas of our lives.
